Canada Child Benefit keeps changing lives of children
January 20, 2022

Welland, On, Jan. 20, 2022 - In 2015, a Liberal government was elected and committed itself to giving Canadian children the best possible start in life.

Five years later, more than 400,000 children have been lifted from poverty. They are living with dignity and hope for a future all children should expect in a country as rich as Canada.

Today, families across the country will be receiving their first Canada Child Benefit payment of 2022. Our Liberal government’s plan puts more money in the pockets of 9 out of 10 families with the Canada Child Benefit, and throughout the pandemic, we provided even more support by temporarily boosting Canada Child Benefit payments with the Young Child Supplement, providing up to an additional $1,200 per child under six.

The best way to grow our economy and make life more affordable for Canadians is by supporting them through COVID-19 and providing families with the support they need. With the cost of living increasing around the world, Canadian families need a real plan to make life more affordable.

Our Liberal government is working to build a better future for all Canadians. Whether it’s by giving parents more with the CCB, getting the job done on $10 a day child care, putting home ownership back within reach, or cutting taxes for middle-class while raising them on the top one percent, we’ll always have Canadians’ backs.

Since the income-tested benefit was introduced in 2016, the poverty rate for children under 18 has fallen to 9.7 per cent in 2019, the most recent year for which data is available. That’s compared to 16.4 per cent in 2015. By the end of 2019, more than $240 million in Canada Child Benefit money had been paid to families in Niagara Centre.

From historic investments in early learning and childcare, to helping with the costs of raising children through the CCB, our government is working to ensure that all children have the tools and resources they need to succeed.

The Canada child Benefit (CCB) is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). It is a tax-free monthly payment made to eligible families to help with the cost of raising children under 18 years of age.  For the 2021-2022 benefit year, the maximum CCB is $6,833 per child under age 6 and $5,765 per child aged 6 through 17.

Quote:

As your Member of Parliament for Niagara Centre, there is a lot to be said about the outcomes reached by bringing Canada’s Parliament closer to home – its all about community – five years of taking care of families, of moving people out of poverty, of standing up for families, and standing up for our communities. The Canada Child Benefit has changed the lives of so many children and we’re all stronger when our children are safe, healthy and supported. Vance Badawey, Member of Parliament – Niagara Centre
