Commemorating the Battle of Britain

On Sunday, I had the honour of laying a wreath to honour the sacrifices of 23 Canadians during the Second World War in the Battle of Britain. Those Canadians were among the soldiers from our country who joined the fight to defeat Nazi Germany in the early days of the war and were instrumental in one of its greatest victories when an outnumbered and outgunned United Kingdom successfully defended its skies against the most powerful airforce the world had ever known.

I especially want to thank the 434 Niagara Peninsula Wing of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association for hosting and organizing the ceremony held at the War Memorial in Chippawa Park in Welland.

Among those in attendance was Tom Vance. Tom recently celebrated his 100th birthday, but in 1942, the then-20-year-old joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and fought in the skies above Europe in a Mk IV Spitfire. What an honour to be given the opportunity to thank such an incredible individual!

Attendees at the Battle of Britain Ceremony were also treated to three flyovers arranged by Alf Beam. In the final flypast, the three-member team flew in the Missing Man Formation, an aerial salute to those who fell in battle.
