All Canadians need reliable high-speed Internet, no matter where they live. The governments of Canada and Ontario are taking action to bring high-speed Internet access to unserved and underserved communities across the province, including a
number of communities in Niagara West.
The federal and provincial governments are providing joint funding of $219 million to bring high-speed Internet access to more than 66,000 households in over 300 communities across Ontario, including thirty local projects in Niagara West, and have announced Rogers as the selected Internet service provider.
In the Township of Wainfleet, this includes rural broadband projects in the communities of Camelot Beach, Long Beach, Morgan’s Point, Ostryhon Corners, Wainfleet Village and Winger.
Additional communities in Niagara West include Grimsby and Grassie i
n the Town of Grimsby; Beamsville, Campden, Jordan, Jordan Station and Vineland in the Town of Lincoln; Beckett’s Bridge, Fenwick, Fonthill and North Pelham in the Town of Pelham, and Abingdon, Allen’s Corners, Attercliffe, Boyle, Caistorville, Canborough, St. Anns, Smithville and Wellandport in the Township of West Lincoln. A number of communities include more than one broadband project.
“Providing reliable Internet access is especially important for rural communities to prosper in our increasingly digital world,” said Vance Badawey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indigenous Services and Member of Parliament for Niagara Centre.
“This investment by both levels of government will ensure families, businesses, and farms in rural Niagara can connect to essential online services and enjoy the additional economic opportunities made available through high-speed Internet.”
“I commend the collaborative efforts of the federal and provincial governments to ensure equitable access to reliable and affordable high-speed Internet for all Canadians, regardless of their location,” said Brian Grant, Mayor of the Township of Wainfleet.
“Access to reliable and affordable high-speed Internet is not a luxury – it’s a necessity for all Canadians, regardless of where they reside. The $219 million partnership with Rogers, spanning over 66,000 households in Ontario, including rural broadband projects throughout Wainfleet, reflects a pivotal step in connecting families and businesses to essential online services.”
“Both the provincial and federal governments have delivered on funding to ensure broadband comes to all parts of Ontario,” said Rob Foster, Councillor for the Regional Municipality of Niagara and Board Member of Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT).
“Building on earlier programs, including the SWIFT project, these latest investments will ensure that rural Ontario will have the high quality internet services required for farmers, industries, and rural residents.”
The projects being announced in Niagara West are part of an existing partnership be
tween Ontario and Canada. On July 29, 2021, the two levels of government announced their partnership to support large-scale, fibre-based projects that will provide high-speed Internet access to more than 280,000 households and businesses across the province.
This historic agreement was made possible by a joint federal-provincial investment totaling more than $1.2 billion.
